Nigerian Politics - CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY. BY PAT ASAKOME
In the days of apartheid government in South Africa the eyes of Allan Paton, welled up in floods of tears, so much so that in solitude, he wrote his very thoughtful novel, "CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY". The same tears have drained through the entire Africa, even when there is no more apartheid, no more colonialism, no more neo-colonialism, not even the dreaded imperialism from people, other than Africans. Yet the whole continent is crying today that the so-called evils perpetrated by foreign colonizers so many years ago are now being replicated and unleashed on Africans by Africans on a higher scale by impunity. Have i no reason to lament, what Africans have made of Africans or what

The banking sector remain vital to the survival of businesses and how the crisis currently preventing the banking sector from playing their critical role in the Nigerian economy is resolved in 2011 will be important.

Nigerian Politics - Falling Standard Of Education In Nigeria: Who Is To Be Blame?
These scholars view it at different perspectives, depending on the angle each of them is looking at it.
Babalola, A (2006) sees the concept from admission of Nigerian University products in developed countries universities. That the first six Nigerian Universities (University of Ibadan, Ile Ife, Lagos, Benin, Nsukka and Zaria) had their products competing favourably with any other University in the world as their products were sought for by University of Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford and London for admission into their post-graduate courses. That these students record breaking performances and when they graduate are employed by the best multi-national companies and corporate bodies

Nigerian Politics - AWOLOWO AT 100
It is now one hundred years since the birth of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and deservedly, his centenary birthday was marked last week. Accordingly, both the living and the dead have wished the legendary nationalist a happy birthday and many prosperous returns right there in his grave in Ikenne. In both life and death, Awo, as Awolowo is fondly referred to, stands tall as one genius and patriotic mind, whose name has refused to be wished away in the annals of Nigeria’s corporate existence. Year after year, Awo’s birthday is celebrated by his admirers across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria in grand style. Given the glamour and enthusiasm with which Awo’s birthday

Nigerian Politics and Lies (Part 2)
Elections in Nigeria have been characterized by rigging, ballot box snatching, thuggery, political assassinations, imposition of unpopular candidates and declaration of false results. The same system ushered in this government. Sensing that the vast majority of Nigerians never believed in them from the outset the Yar'adua administration promised to carry out political reformation as soon as possible but after several months nothing tangible has happened in this direction. With the 2011 polls by the corner, the Justice Uwais' electoral reforms panel report is yet to see the light of day in the national Assembly.Agriculture still remains a shadow of itself with Nigeria depending on massive

Nigerian Politics - Campaign Group urges support for President Jonathan
The chairman of Goodluck Jonathan Global Campaign Team (GJGCT), has made a clarion call to Nigerians to support the aspiration of the incumbent President Jonathan towards next year's general elections. Mr. Peter Eledan, who is also the vice chairman of the Nigerian in Diaspora Organisation (NIDOE), United Kingdom Chapter made the call in a chat with the news men in London recently. He said it was very crucial for the youths which constitute about 60 percent of Nigerians' population to fully support the President with their votes and to stand by their votes next year, noting that the country at this moment deserved a proactive leader that can move the country out of political

If there is anything that hinders the Nigerian government from being able to contain and eliminate security threats such as the one currently posed by remnants of the radical religious sect in Maiduguri, it is the attitude of not tolerating criticism of its policies and the proclivity to pretend there are no problems when there are glaring evidence of such problems. For as long as the government will not accept people's views regarding its policies and look for genuine public opinion – genuine and not ones gathered from people randomly picked by those around the political leaders – it will be a grave mistake

Nigerian Politics - Africa in the pursuit of Democracy
AFRICA IN PURSUIT OF DEMOCRACY
Before the revolutionary wind began to blow in the northern part of Africa, I felt disappointed whenever I heard people say that democracy was growing at a high velocity in Africa. In my view, Democracy in this vast continent was much the same thing as a sapling on a drought-stricken land. I have no doubt that the fight for it has started in earnest, however it will take us so long to emerge victoriously. If what I read about democracy is true, African nations still have a long way to go. If the whole world could view Abraham Lincoln's "Democracy is the government of the people by the people and for the people" as simple and perfect, my people (the

Nigerian Politics - PDP Presidential Primaries: Vote for Yar'Adua, against OBJ
The scoreboard between OBJ/Atiku and Yar'dua/Jonathan's regimes is what was loudly given by the PDP presidential primaries delegates at the Eagles Square on January 13, 14, 2011. It is heart warming that Nigerian politicians are learning gradually and in no distant time may no more be taken for a ride. The Yar'Adua/Goodluck government may be far from the best we had hoped for but in comparison with those very sickening eight years of OBJ/Atiku, it is better. And those delegates said so with their votes.
They may have seen or noticed too much that nauseates. They may have been vexed for so long by the abysmal failure that was OBJ/Atiku's government for eight years and

Nigerian Politics - Nigeria: Diminished By Greed
To a people addicted to the tragic luxury of self-delusion, truth hurts badly. But then, truth always refuses to go away. It lingers around to perpetually taunt and haunt those that loathe and despise its face.
Now, the truth we can no longer afford to deny today is that anybody, in fact, any animal can rule Nigeria. I mean that even a baboon can be Nigeria's president or governor. It is that simple! All it will take, after all, is for the baboon to get a Maurice Iwu to rig him in and then learn the simple art of stuffing dirty bags with dirty naira notes and delivering them at the appropriate quarters and at the appropriate time, and Nigeria is his to pillage and desecrate as he

A lot of people have on the contrary continued to question the assertion or what they call claim that the Igbo and indeed any nation with Nigerian larger society are marginalized. Nigerian Politics - POST-ELECTIONS VIOLENCE by Pat Asakome
"Don't divide the child," Mr. Politician, President Failure. It is left for us to go without "the child" instead of splitting it into two, either along tribal line or religious divides. The history is long, and it dates from time to time when Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa ruled this geographical entity called Nigeria. The "sing song" then, was the real "unity" of what was then known as the Southern protectorate with the Northern protectorate in 1914. The united entity was then christened Niger area by Flora Shaw, the wife of the then colonial Governor General of Nigeria, Lord Lugard

Nigerian Politics - The doctrine of necessity by Benedict Ahanonu
Fellow Nigerians, it is indeed wonderful that the latest doctrine in political science and public administration: "the doctrine of necessity" is originating from our country. Truly, the feeling across the world is that Nigerians are capable of doing anything; ranging from the good, the bad and to the ugly.
Here in Nigeria and as it is of common knowledge or allegedly so, armed robbers turn to vultures to escape arrest. In Nigeria also, grandmothers steal babies and boldly claim a miracle; or where else than in Nigeria will somebody be banished from his father land in this modern times because he was accused of practicing witchcraft. He highlighted some of the odds against the presidential aspirant, who judging from his antecedent as the former military President is very unpopular among the majority of Nigerians.

Nigerian Politics - Jonathan's Election and Growing Belief in One Nigeria
The election of Goodluck Jonathan as president of this country signpost so much hopes for the country. It may be too early for analysts to go full length talking about the huge lot that hope offers us by this historic election. In this work we shall be looking at how this election gives hope to any qualified Nigerian to not only aspire to the presidency of Nigeria but to be able to sunder, as Jonathan did, all hitherto primordial imports into our national life and the skewed and deceptive appeal to some majority ethnic groups that some belong, and which have been used to serve self ends at the end of the day.

We are better situated to begin this article with the pioneers of Ohanaeze Ndiigbo which I quite believe is vital to what we are set to achieve. Ohanaeze Ndiigbo was formed immediately after the Nigerian-Biafran War which ended in 1970 by seven men of Igbo extraction, namely Chief K. O. Mbadiwe, Dr. Akanu Ibiam, Chief Dennis Osadebe (notice that Chief Osadebe was from Anioma because we shall revert to him at the last paragraph of this article) Chief Ugochukwu, Dr. Pius Okigbo, and two other notable Igbo men. These men with absolute beliefs in the unity of the Igbo greatly began and advanced the course of bringing together and reshaping the destiny of the Igbo people, with the aim

Nigerian Politics - Leadership in Nigeria: the way forward
No doubt Nigeria is a great nation. The peculiarities in her existence gives credence to this, a survivor of a deadly civil war, most populous black nation, over 250 distinctly diverse ethnic groups, rich mineral resources base and a people of unique entrepreneurial spirit, found in every country in the world. A Harvard professor need not debate the genius of this people, so let a child be silent. The irony always lies in its leadership. The truth is often shrouded in personal opinions, a direct stimulation from prospective gain, having no bearing on a possible utilitarian aspiration. It’s no more news that President Umaru Musa Yar’adua has struggled with sickness since his

Who are the Yoruba? The first obvious answer to this question is the Yoruba are a nationality, numbering about 40 million, the majority of whom live in the South Western part of the state of Nigeria in West Africa. Obvious as this answer is, it is not wholly explanatory, and certainly, it is not without its own controversy. First, regarding its explanatory status. One has to add, that the Yoruba are people, that speak a common language, Yoruba, which belongs to the Kwa group of the Niger-Congo linguistic family, and it has about 12 dialects; that they are a well urbanized group with genius in arts as symbolized in the famous "Ife Bronzes"; that Yoruba people are also found in Togo,

The Republic of Biafra: Once Upon A Time In Nigeria: My Story Of The Biafra-Nigerian Civil War - A Struggle For SURVIVAL (1967-1970)
Not quite four months after the Western Region's election of October 10, 1965, did the localized mayhem in that Region find its way furiously into the center of the nation on January 15, 1966! It was like a whirl-wind of nothing but anarchy and lawlessness. The serious aftermath of the marred and rigged election was that it acted as the last straw that broke the Carmel's back, providing immediate reason for the army to overthrow the government of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Anarchy ensued; a counter coup led to the death of Major-General Ironsi. Callous barbarous massacre of thousands of easterners in the North followed. With their lives in jeopardy, easterners fled for safety to eastern region;

Nigerian Politics - Reforming the Eze Title/society, a Must for Ibusa
One major aspect of Ibusa tradition that urgently calls for reform is that which has to do with the Obi/Eze title, yet the Ibusa community has marched on for long with the traditional institution. That the Eze/society should be efficiently reformed to meet up with today’s world is indisputable. The Obi/Eze title as practiced in Ibusa has become inelegant only ineluctably meant for the aged who appear to have abandoned active lifestyle with preference for spending their years in Ibusa. This very aspect of our culture must be given due cogitation to it to become much more relevant to present happenings and uphold better societal values which the people of Ibusa must reap from.
Nigerian Politics - CBN denies bias, shareholders fault sack of bank chiefs
AGAINST the backdrop of the on-going reforms in the banking sector, shareholders and other stakeholders yesterday complained that the action and subsequent appointment of new helmsmen lacked ingredients of good corporate governance. This came as the Central Bank denied accusations that it was biased in the audit of the banks. According to CBN, though the banks were in different conditions, thus requiring different solutions, the underlying consideration of fairness in the assessment of the banks' capital adequacy, liquidity and corporate governance was sacrosanct. From the shareholders' group, to stockbrokers and experts in the sector, another question was: "What were the criteria

What is An Online Newspaper?
An online newspaper, also called a web newspaper, is actually a daily newspaper that is published and read over the World Wide Web or Internet. It can be an individual daily that is available online only or it could be an online version of a printed periodical.
The internet has allowed the printed daily newspapers to compete with television, radio and other means of broadcast journalism in presenting their news timely. Previously, you had to wait till the morning to read about an event which had happened the evening before. Online newspapers are updated several times a day, so you come to know about an event the moment it happens. The greatest advantage

The south East Governors made themselves the laughing stock of the world with the announcement of their unanimous satisfaction terming the condition of the President fit to continue to rule the nation.

Before him, the 419 scam generation had succeeded in earning us the shameful label of the Scam Mecca of the world. Then there is our unfortunate political evolution that has entrenched corruption and bad governance as synonymous with Nigeria.Sick display of ill-gotten wealth by military dictators and supposedly democratic politicians further confirmed us as a nation of questionable values.

The uprising which has been started early in the year February 2011 inspired by the recent protests in the Arab world such as Tunisia, Egypt broke out in Libya against Gaddafis government and which quickly turned into a general uprising. Both the ruling party and the Libyan citizens are fighting against each other. But its ruler Gaddafi refuses to bow down. Even he did not obey the orders of the United States which has asked the Libyan leader to step down. But he said that he will prefer to die a martyr" if necessary in his fight against the rebels and external forces. This was quoted in the Al-Jazeera.

The limiting factors to owning a home includes some of the following; cost of land acquisition, construction cost, style, design, purpose and use. These however, have little or no effect on the desires of the elites, the rich and the well-to-do in the society on developing and owning property. In recent years, home ownership for the middle and low income earners of the society is turning to be a mirage

How do a few Third World political movements become global causes celebres, while most remain isolated? This book rejects dominant views that needy groups readily gain help from selfless nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Instead, they face a Darwinian struggle for scarce resources where support goes to the savviest, not the neediest. Examining Mexico's Zapatista rebels and Nigeria's Ogoni ethnic group, the book draws critical conclusions about social movements, NGOs, and "global civil society".

Nigerian Politics - Terrorism: A Personal Issue
Nigerian Umar Abdulmutallab is 23 years old, educated in London, and anyone meeting him for the first time would gain an impression of polite formality. He is respectful and considerate to his elders and also to anyone who is of a difference culture to himself. Good with children; a quiet and private person and like so many of us, he prefers to keep his friendships slightly distant. Abdulmutallab needs to keep his friends at arm’s length, because his goal in life is to die an Al Qaeda martyr and take the lives of as many innocent westerners with him as possible in the process. On Christmas Day, 2009, Abdulmutallab failed in an attempt to blow up a plane over Detroit,
Nigerian Politics - Private Secondary Schools: The Bedrock Of Fallen Standard Of Education In Nigeria
Until the government decides to come up with an effective monitoring team on private secondary school institutions in Nigeria, things will surely remain bad for that sector in the country. However, I doubt if this can be effectively achieved since the wives of senior political office holders and aides are the proprietresses of the private secondary schools in the country thus relegating the public owned schools to the background in what has become a shame for the country. Owing a private school has become one of the easiest money-spinning ventures for retried political office holders who charge unfeasible and unobtainable fees. Examination malpractice begins in private secondary

The Crippled Giant: Nigeria since Independence
"Crippled Giant is an excellent summary of Nigerian political history.... The work is notable for even-handed analysis of both history and theory. The result is an introduction of the highest quality to the study of Nigerian politics." -- African Studies Review"Osaghae, an academic with a refreshingly neutral and understated approach to the maddening follies of his government, has produced a highly readable overview of Nigeria's politics, economy, and foreign relations. Rich in detail, his account is also a useful tour of earlier thematic treatments of the subject." --

Nigerian Politics - I LOVE NIGERIA, DIE
I LOVE THIS COUNTRY DIE I have continued to read with amusement all reports and editorials and write-ups in the media about how Nigeria is on the brink and how it is a failed state and the continuous bombardment of government policies and their inability to deliver on promises and projects. I find this funny because Nigeria is a growing nation with diverse people, cultures and opinions with surmountable problems that are actually quite easily addressed, but we have not looked at ourselves as part of the solutions to these problems that we have in one way or the other caused. We are a nation of people that has not mastered individual development, how can we be looking for
Nigerian Politics - Anioma People Of Delta State: Igbos Or Not Igbos
The conundrum surrounding the ancestry of the Anioma people have reached its peak with the Igbo with claims and counterclaims. As the Igbo historians uphold arguments to support their claims and the Anioma people counterclaim attachments to any existing ethnic group in the country, this article will discuss such claims and counterclaims.
The Anioma people are geographically located in Delta State of Nigeria although some of their communities can be found in other states such as Edo, Anambra, Rivers and Imo States. The word "Anioma" is a coinage and not a name as several historians misleadingly understand and was made by Chief Dennis Osadebe.

Nigerian Politics - Foreign Skills for International Lawyers
The choice of a particular lawyer can be as varied as your choice for a particular restaurant, be it an Italian, Chinese or Indian restaurant. From business contracts to civil disputes, the skills of lawyers are often called upon for a number of different reasons not least to help find a potential solution.
Lawyers are qualified and licensed to practice law, some are highly specialised, offering their expertise in a particular area of law. From employment law to family law, immigration law to business law, there are no shortages of fields that lawyers are not able to advise on. With a number of migrant communities, especially from emerging markets living in the UK in large cities

Nigerian Politics - IT and Nigeria's 2020 Goals
For a country that missed its second industrial revolution to a chaotic political and economic history, it is a potentially grave prognosis. Nigeria now runs the very real risk of failing to achieve what historians call the third industrial revolution: of computerised digital technology, telecommunications and the internet, which have collectively altered every aspect of life and living. There is no denying that ICTs can spike development and eventually help improve the condition of individual lives. Developing economies that fail to register on the Networked World can therefore only fall into progressively deeper grades of underdevelopment and poverty.

The Trouble with Nigeria
The eminent African novelist and critic, here addresses Nigeria's problems, aiming to challenge the resignation of Nigerians and inspire them to reject old habits which inhibit Nigeria from becoming a modern and attractive country. In this famous book now reprinted, he professes that the only trouble with Nigeria is the failure of leadership, because with good leaders Nigeria could resolve its inherent problems such as tribalism; lack of patriotism; social injustice and the cult of mediocrity; indiscipline; and corruption.Price: $16.95

Nigerian Politics - Creation of More States: Broad Way to Socio-economic Developments in Nigeria
Although some have argued against creation of states in the country, stating that such can only lead to over-dependence on the federal government, I differ from this argument, in that the experience drawn from the creation of states in Nigeria in previous years has yielded abundant dividends for the country. Many of these impacts this article will discuss as proves that the creation of states contrary to dissenting opinions has ushered in new dawn of growth and developments and in addition availability of social amenities in the country. The remark that the Nigeria of today is much more developed than the Nigeria of 1966 before the creation of 12 States by Gen. Murtala Mohammed
Nigerian Politics - Local Government Administration and the Challenges of Rural Development in Nigeria
Abstract
Rural development of the grassroots has been the concern of every responsible and responsive political system. This is because development and participation have continued to elude people of the grassroots. Development remains insignificant if it does not positively affect the lives of those in the periphery of decision making arrangement. The Nigerian state therefore created local government as the third tier of government whose objective is to ensure effective, measurable and efficient service delivery to the people. Local government is faced with various difficulties. The major concern of this paper is to dwell on these difficulties and illuminates the factors that

Nigerian Politics - 8 REASONS FOR THE DEARTH OF THE READING CULTURE IN NIGERIA
Culture is projected through the outfits worn, greetings/exchange of pleasantries, marriage ceremonies, births and death ceremonies, business transactions, religious inclination and other social and moral dispositions. Culture brings about easy identification and assimilation into a group, and also distinguishes one from another group.
Since culture embodies the way of life of a particular group, can we boldly say that the reading culture is an integral part of our every day life, especially in teens and youths? Do Nigerians place a high premium on it? Is the reading culture being imbibed by the young ones at an early age? Do Nigerians love reading books? Unfortunately the

Nigerian Politics - Tackling That Deadly Virus That Ensures That Nothing Works In Nigeria?
I shall be glad if my readers supply answers to the question posed as the title of this piece. Nigeria appears to find its policies difficult to actualize, and our leaders are not helping matters, these policies when tried in other countries see the light of the day but grossly fail to materialize in our dear country. Even our leaders do not also help matters, so that ordinarily we perpetually await developmental policies and agendas which in the end we become sure that they will never manifest or grow beyond the planning level. Mention any policy in Nigeria and majority of the citizens who are familiar with the public policies of the country will tell you to forget it. This is

Nigerian Banks - Unmasking the Culprits in the Banking Crisis
An old African saying; "When the wind blows the bottom of a chicken, it reveals a lot beneath it."Current mayhem in the financial sector opens up an opportunity for Nigeria to rid itself of the political and economic cancer it has endured for decades; corruption. As the events unfolded and the crackdown on debtors and bank leaders of the banking sector gather thrust the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) engaged on tougher measures to reign in the perpetrators.Recently the central bank audited ten banks, declaring five close to insolvency and leaving five more intact. They then removed the five bank chief executive officers and
